Legal Sea Foods Extends Brand and Revenue, Improves Employee Communications, with Innovative Web Strategy
October 01, 2008 - For over 50 years, Legal Sea Foods Inc. has set the standard for quality and freshness in the seafood and restaurant business. With more than 30 restaurants throughout the eastern U.S., Legal Sea Foods has earned scores of honors and a reputation for the finest seafood. However, the company’s innovative approach and commitment to excellence reaches even beyond its renowned restaurant business.
Legal Sea Foods had visions of extending its brand, and its revenue, via a new online mail order business. In 2004, after an extensive search, it selected Getfused to help create this new e-shopping experience. Although the project was wildly successful, at the time, neither company realized that this single-focused engagement would turn into an ongoing strategic partnership that would impact not only the online order operations, but also Legal Sea Foods’ entire front-end web presence and its company-wide intranet.
Since then, Getfused has worked closely with Legal’s marketing, technology and line of business teams to refine its online strategy to attract a broader, nation-wide audience; use advanced web-based technology to streamline its business processes and lower its overhead; and identify new channels for growth. Today, Getfused’s relationship with Legal Sea Foods drives continual improvements in Legal’s top-line revenue and reductions in expenses.

- Online shopping: Getfused analyzed Legal Sea Food’s mail order business, recommended processes to improve it online, and built the online shopping site. The shop site went live in 2004, and continues to be enhanced with Getfused’s expertise and assistance. Online sales have eclipsed traditional mail order sales—even in the face of growing traditional mail order revenue—and have grown 30% year-over-year since its inception. Legal Sea Foods expects gift card sales to more than triple in 2008 thanks to “velvet gloving” that directs people to the gift card area and streamlines check out processes.
- Public web site: After demonstrating success with the initial online ordering project, Getfused was selected to develop a new, refreshed public web site for Legal Sea Foods. Getfused walked Legal through the process for creating a user-centric site that built upon and extended the Legal Sea Foods brand, specifying usage patterns for all types of visitors and quickly driving them to valuable, relevant content. Getfused brought a new level of interactivity to the site so that users could experience many facets of Legal Sea Foods offerings, and taught Legal’s team how to evaluate site statistics so they could enhance site pages and drive what Legal’s says is a “phenomenal increase” in click throughs. As a result, Legal Sea Foods has realized greater event bookings for its Exchange Conference Center, substantially increased online leads and bookings for Private Dining, doubled its newsletter subscribers, and has driven so much attendance at events such as wine tastings that they often sell out shortly after being posted online. In addition to ensuring compliancy with PCI standards, the new site also been honored with several awards, including being named a top web site by Hospitality Magazine, and being the first restaurant web site to meet of the National Foundation of the Blind’s standards through compliancy with Section 508 of the American Disabilities Act.
- FishNet intranet: When Legal Sea Foods wanted to embark on an improved intranet to enhance communications and productivity for 3,500 employees, and reduce company costs, they turned to Getfused. While Legal’s team identified the business processes underlying the intranet, Getfused helped by restructuring the information on FishNet to make it more intuitive for employees, and defining the technical functionality needed to facilitate the human process. Using Getfused’s iterative methodology and agile development processes, Legal Sea Foods created an intranet that can easily be refined as business needs evolve. Now, pre-meal and training videos are streamed from FishNet rather than having to be recorded to tape or DVD and distributed physically to each Legal Sea Foods location; managers in training can find all the documents they need online, automated email reminders have reduced the time to process paperwork for new hires and terminations; and the company has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in printing costs by bringing so many forms and documents online.
